'This land which we inherited from our parents, belongs to us all. We call it Lithuania, and we make every effort to ensure that the name will never disappear. We write and pronounce it the same way that we articulate the names of other nations and states. We would like them to pronounce this name with the same respect'.

26th April Cork 2005: Following the extremely successful Slovenian EYE TRY exhibition, May brings Lithuania to Cork in the shape of MADE IN LITHUANIA -the fifth instalment of the Cork Civic Trust Cork 2005 year long project – Enlargement! – bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork.
In MADE IN LITHUANIA Vilnius based artist, Vilma Šileikienė explores the peculiar characteristics that, from her perspective, contribute to what maintains Lithuania’s uniqueness in the new European Union political landscape.
The exhibits on display have been selected subjectively. The artist avoids goods of mass production to present hand-made articles created for either pragmatic or aesthetic needs. Some of them have been created out of necessity or prudence, others out of the need for perfection or adornment. Many of the objects eventually acquire religious or artistic significance.
Šileikienė, one of Lithuania’s leading contemporary young artists, is quite definite about her work.
“I‘m not interested in ethnography I‘m interested in handmade things. I‘m interested in stories of making these things. I‘m not interested in the precision of the facts in these exhibits life stories. I‘m interested in the talkers and tellers of these stories..”
MADE IN LITHUANIA will be officially launched by Mary Hopkins, President Cork Rotary. Opening to the public on Wednesday 4th May, it will run until 27th May 2005.
