Emerging Cork

Emerging Cork is an extended snapshot and record of the changes that have occurred in the built environment within Cork City during the last five to seven years.

Cork is probably one of the most compact cities in Europe. Over the centuries much of its streetscape and topography has remained almost intact. The recent and proposed developments presented in Emerging Cork have by and large been achieved within the context of preserving Cork City’s centuries of uniqueness.

Deliberately devoid of commentary, Emerging Cork takes its audience on a pictorial journey from the Lifetime Lab (formerly the old Waterworks) on the Lee Road to Blackrock Castle on the edge of Cork harbour and the developments in between.

PRESS RELEASE
CORK CIVIC TRUST CENTURY PRESENTATION FOR LORD MAYOR

Cork: June 1st sees the Board of Cork Civic Trust literally book out the Office of the Lord Mayor when they present The Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael Ahern with one hundred copies of the recent publication Emerging Cork by Cork Civic Trust’s John X Miller.

With an introduction by Irish Examiner Property Editor, Tommy Barker, and images from a wide spectrum of professional photographers, including Cork-based Janice O‘ Connell, Kevin Dwyer and Tony O’Connell, who also acted as photographic advisor, Emerging Cork is an extended snapshot and record of the changes, and the swift pace of the unprecedented development that has occurred within Cork City during the last five to seven years.

Encompassing elements that impact on city life, from education to leisure; from housing to high tech facilities; from riverside to streetscape, and from culture to commerce, Emerging Cork focuses on exterior perspectives and their architectural impact. However, interior elements, crucial in many ways to achieving harmonious work life balance, have also been included.

John X Miller comments, “Cork is probably one of the most compact cities in Europe. Over the centuries much of its streetscape and topography has remained almost intact. The recent and proposed developments presented in Emerging Cork have by and large been achieved within the context of preserving Cork City’s centuries of uniqueness.”

Deliberately devoid of commentary, Emerging Cork takes its audience on a pictorial journey from the Lifetime Lab (formerly the old Waterworks) on the Lee Road to Blackrock Castle on the edge of Cork harbour and the developments in between.

“It is entirely fitting that Cork’s first citizen should be presented with the first publication to visually record the changing nature of our city’s built environment. The Lord Mayor has been a vocal supporter of the Trust and its work, and, as he comes to the end of his term in office, Cork Civic Trust would like to express its appreciation for his support one hundred fold. What better way to do this than present the Lord mayor with one hundred copies of Emerging Cork ,” says Miller.

Emerging Cork is available for purchase at the Cork Vision Centre, North Main Street and at Eason’s bookstores.
