It is imperative that we should not be afraid. Preoccupied with the war on terror as we are, we should bear in mind that our generation is not the first to be confronted with terrorists and their deeds. The nettle of terror is just that - and should goad us to transcend the purely human and ephemeral. Like our Greek ancestors, we should be afraid but of one thing -that the heaven should fall down on our heads.

SLOVAKIA INVASION STARTS AT THE CORK VISION CENTRE
28th June Cork 2005: July 2005 brings a Slovak invasion to Cork in the shape of IT HAPPENED ELSEWHERE - the seventh instalment of the Cork Civic Trust Cork 2005 year long project – Enlargement! – bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork.
Artist trio - Dusan Zahoransky; Aneta Mona Chisa and Marek Kvetan – collaborating for the first time in a series of works devised and created specifically for the Cork Vision Centre, - and ten musicians will exhibit and perform at the Cork Vision Centre.
Curator, Bratislava- based Juraj Carny sees the exhibition as an opportunity to expose Irish audiences to current Slovakian art. “Our exhibition here is an adventure; almost a work in progress. We want to create a connection with Cork and generate a sense of involvement and connection.”
Ranging across the full spectrum of media, the exhibition will include paintings; installations; photography; sculpture; video and live performance. Very much to the fore of Slovakian contemporary arts, IT HAPPENED ELSEWHERE seeks to challenge, question, communicate and entertain.
Since celebrating its accession to the EU a little over a year ago with Patrick’s Street first street party, Slovakia has developed a strong relationship with Cork. Evidence of this growing relationship is the fact that Cork Civic Trust will take the Enlargement! project beyond the Vision Centre to various venue throughout the City; with an Exhibition on the life of Alexander Dubcek at the Cork Public Museum; a photographic exhibition combined with a Slovak Food week in the English Market at the Farmgate café and the Bodega bar. In addition, there will be free concerts – lunchtime 1pm and evening 7pm at the Cork Vision Centre on 6th July.
IT HAPPENED ELSEWHERE will be officially launched by Dr Agnes Biro, Slovakian State Secretary for Culture. Opening to the public on Wednesday 6th July, it will run until 28th July 2005
