29th July Cork 2005: Cyprus comes to Cork in the shape of KOSMOS – the eighth instalment of the Cork Civic Trust Cork 2005 year long project – Enlargement! – bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork.
During the course of July Cyprus’ foremost contemporary artist Andreas Savva has been living in Cork, wandering its streets, absorbing the city’s atmosphere and letting a Cork muse inspire him as he toils at the National Sculpture Factory. The result of this inspiration will be unveiled at the Cork Vision Centre when KOSMOS – an innovative contemporary installation devised and created specifically for the Cork Vision Centre - is officially launched.
Part wall, part cage, part web, trapping and smashing a series of objects, KOSMOS vertically divides the Vision Centre space into two. As a consequence Cork, in the form of the city scale model, is also separated, creating a physical metaphor – for among others – the situation that reigns both in Cyprus, Andreas Savva’s home land, and in Ireland.
KOSMOS is a sequel to his seminal work, “Opportunist” a series of in situ installations, which has been on-going since 1993. Andreas Savva has exhibited widely throughout Europe from Athens where he created a specially commissioned sculpture for the Olympics to Germany, Italy and most recently Portugal. KOSMOS is his inaugural Irish exhibition.
KOSMOS will be officially launched by Thomas McCarthy, Poet and Deputy Director Cork 2005. Opening to the public on Wednesday 3rd August, it will run until 25th August 2005
