15th February Cork 2005:
Hot on the heels of the evocatively successful Hungarian work, the Cork Civic Trust Cork 2005 partnership project - Enlargement – bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork- focuses on life in Latvia as seen through the lens of internationally renowned Latvian photographer Andrejs Grants in solo photographic exhibition.
LATVIA; CHANGING and UNCHANGING REALITY
Taking its main theme as the people in Latvia, this photo-documentary records a variety of Latvian people of different social levels, professions, nationalities, generations, people in their usual surroundings – in the city or countryside, at work or at home, in festivities or alone.
The selection not only focuses on portraits, but rather on persons in real places and real situations. The environment is a very important element that together with the person itself visualises Latvia’s unique national and social identity.
Grants’ objective is to reveal the universally shared values of love, peace, happiness, harmony, as well as different states of the human mind – joy, sorrow, pain, romantic passion, and irony. Grant’s brings his unique eye and photographic style to create a sharp uncluttered collection of persons and situations.
Andrejs Grants has exhibited internationally in the USA, throughout Europe and Russia.
LATVIA; CHANGING and UNCHANGING REALITY was officially launched by the Latvian Ambassador to Ireland. Opening to the public on Wednesday 2nd March, it will run until 30th March 2005.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
PHOTOGRAPHY IS THIS MARVELLOUS OPPORTUNITY, THIS PARADOX THAT CAN BE CAPTURED AND PLAYED ON – THE ETERNITY OF THE MOMENT. YOU PICTURE A MOMENT, AND IF IT’S THE RIGHT MOMENT, THEN IT’LL BE A REFLECTION OF ETERNITY AS WELL.
