MOVING STATUES AT THE CORK VISION CENTRE

November 2005 sees the culmination of the Cork Civic Trust Cork 2005 year long project –Enlargement! – bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork with the opening of 4, a multimedia exhibition representing Ireland’s contribution to the project at the Cork Vision Centre.

Four statues in the shape of stunning life-size wooden sculptures will move from West Cork to the take up residence in the Cork Vision Centre on North Main Street. Each sculpture, measuring approximately 5 metres high and weighing more than one ton, was created by Schull resident, Susan O’ Toole who began sculpting in her early teens. Apprenticed to Ana Pacheco, she spent 6 years working in wood and stone. She has exhibited widely including at 15th International Biennale Lausanne, and has created the river based sculpture "Maighdean mhara" in Ballydehob, and the iconic "Tree Sentinels" - a tribute to victims of the Famine of 1845

Ballydehob-based John Minihan, one of Ireland's most celebrated photographers, whose photographs of Francis Bacon, Princess Diana, Andy Warhol, Van Morrison and countless other famous faces became known worldwide, will exhibit a series of photographs from his wonderful record of life in Athy, Shadows from the Pale: Portrait of an Irish Town (1996).

New Zealand born,Hammond Journeaux, who lives in Reen, West Cork, will present a series of drawings and paintings based upon a translation by Thomas Kinsella of one of the great laments, and one of the greatest love poems in the Irish language - Caoineadh Art O’ Laoghaire

American Frank Russell has lived in West Cork since 1988, and has exhibited widely, including at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C; National Academy of Design, New York; Galerie Chedel, Geneva; Fine Arts Gallery, Cork and Dublin. The style and impact of his visually striking abstract work is best described by Frank..

“After years of work, I want my images to fly at me of themselves- the artist has to meet his picture all at once across an abyss, like an acrobat catching an acrobat - the picture is there, if the artist is fast enough and steady enough to catch it.”

Living up to its reputation as one of the most successful and innovative visual arts projects of 2005, the final instalment of Enlargement! – bringing the new Europe to Cork will be jointly launched by Dan Linehan, Chief Executive, Evening Echo and Michael Mulcahy, Chief Executive Business Cork. Opening to the public on Friday 4th November, it will run until 17th December 2005
