The restoration of 50 Pope’s Quay, Cork City, which has stood for more than 270 years has now been completed following a donation of €450,000 by the Musgrave Group. Work on restoring the unique Queen Anne red brick building, dating from approximately 1730, began in 1997 but was suspended two and a half years ago due to a shortage of funds.
50 Pope’s Quay is the flagship project of Cork Civic Trust, a non-profit voluntary organisation dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the city’s architectural heritage and environment.
"This building is of major architectural and historic significance in that it is the oldest building of its type in Ireland," according to John X Miller, Director of Cork Civic Trust.
Musgrave Group's support will ensure the building becomes an architectural focal point during and beyond Cork’s designation as European Capital of Culture in 2005. 50 Pope’s Quay is owned by Cork City Council which recently approved its transfer to the Trust on the basis of a 99 year lease.
Trust Chairperson, Seamus Scally is also Group Managing-Director of The Musgrave Group:
"Apart from wishing to thank my own Chairman, Hugh Mackeown for Musgrave’s generous support, I would also like to thank all our other sponsors, as well as Cork City Council and the Department of the Environment and Local Government for the sustained commitment shown to this magnificent project."
"Preserving Cork’s past for future generations presents a constant challenge for Cork Civic Trust and apart from local government and corporate generosity we also need the ongoing support of the public through membership of the Trust." |

"Council applauds the work of the Trust both in relation to the restoration of 50 Pope’s Quay and the other projects it has undertaken since it was formed back in 1989. We are also deeply grateful to the Musgrave Group for coming up with the necessaryfunds to complete this project. Musgraves have been a backbone of Cork’s business community for more than 125 years and it is gratifying to know that their support for Cork remains as strong as ever."
The Chairman of Musgrave Group, Hugh Mackeown said:
"Musgrave commenced its business in the heart of the city at nearby Cornmarket St. and this contribution is intended as a measure of our gratitude for the support we have always received from the people of Cork. The restoration of 50 Pope’s Quay will serve as a proud symbol of the City’s European Capital of Culture designation in 2005."
