"In Loving Memory" - by Martin Conlon

An exploration of visual linkages between St. Finbarre's Cemetery and St. Joseph's Cemetery; two well known Cork sites, rarely observed in depth.

Press Release:

In Loving Memory – Images in Stone at the Cork Vision Centre

Cork 1st May 2008:
‘In Loving Memory’, a solo exhibition of visually and emotionally stirring images by Cork-based Photographer Martin Conlon, will showcase the May programme at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter’s.

‘In Loving Memory’ is the culmination of several years of visiting St. Finbarre’s and St. Joseph’s Cemetery on a casual basis. Over time Conlon became aware of the differing ways people choose to memorialise those who have passed on. Struck by the craftsmanship of stone cutters, sculptors and engravers, Conlon seeks through his images to explore these public arenas of private grief and to illustrate that both St. Finbarre’s and St. Joseph’s are rewarding places to visit, explore and to reflect upon.

St. Finbarre’s and St. Joseph’s cemetery’s are unusual in the fact that both are and always have been non denominational – a fact on which the great English novelist Thackeray noted of St. Joseph’s cemetery.“..a new and handsome cemetery lying a little way out of town and where, thank God! Protestants and Catholics may live together, without Clergymen quarrelling over their coffins”.

According to Conlon, “Cemeteries are places for the living and both St. Joseph’s and St.Finbarre’s offer visitors fascinating insights into our collective history. They contain the remains of many of Cork’s most prominent individuals and families as well as the wider community.”

Evocative and emotive ‘In Loving Memory’ is a visually striking journey through an aspect of Cork’s heritage that remains largely unexplored.

‘In Loving Memory’ will be officially launched on Thursday 1st May 2008 by Senator Dan Boyle, Green Party Chairman at 6pm at the Cork Vision Centre. The exhibition opens to the public from May 2nd – 27th. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Opening Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm
(With the exception of installation periods)
